Venlo - 1617 Haarlem

Portrait of Gerrit Jansz. Van Schooten. (1541-1595)

Engraving. Recto of a silver or gold medallion.

Signed and dated “Ao 1579 HGoltzius” and “Vive ut vivas.aeta.,suae 38.”
5.1 x 3.9 cm. on square paper 6,2 x 5 cm. B. 196, Hollstein 214, Van Someren 4957, New Hollstein 250 3(III).

Good impression and condition. There were also impressions made of the verso of the medallion with a coat of arms. The identification is confirmed by his portrait in the funeral procession of William of Orange,
with the name Sr. Gerard de Schoten.

The spot in the third state is caused by the hole in the medallion by which it could be hung around the neck.

Provenance: Count d’Arenberg (Lugt 567), E. Fabricius
(Lugt 847a and 919ter).
