Among Rembrandts early prints this is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular. In the distance there is the landscape with the
buildings only really visible in the earlier impressions.
Celestial light strikes the amazed shepherds and their cattle. The Angel appears in the sky. It is the first of Rembrandts so called dark prints.
The strong contrasts makes us remember the prints of Hendrik Goudt after Adam Elsheimer, which could have been an inspiration for Rembrandt. |
