REMBRANDT HARMENSZ. VAN RIJN
1606 Leiden - 1669 Amsterdam
  SOLD

Beggar seated on a bank

Etching, 1630.
Signed and dated in the plate “RHL” (in monogram) 1630”
11.6 x 7 cm.
Bartsch 174, Hollstein 174., Nowell-Usticke 174. 1(II).
New Hollstein (Hinterding and Rutgers) 50. 1(II).

Fine impression, excellent condition with 2-3 cm margin all round. The vertical scratches visible.
On 17th century paper with part of a Foolscap watermark (the three balls).

The face of the beggar looks like a self-portrait of Rembrandt. In the earliest impressions the plate edges are very uneven and the black burr gives an unbalanced look. This impression is lighter and is maybe from 1640s, when we know the plate was reprinted by Rembrandt.

Provenance; University Library Cambridge (Lugt 2475) Stamp on the old 18th century backing.
Plate not in existence.
