The Pater Familias |

Etching.
Signed and dated Avostade 1643.
12.7 x 9.5 cm. with 2-3 cm margin.
Bartsch 33, Dutuit 33, Godefroy 33. 4(V), Hollstein 4(VI) |
|
Fine impression, some surface dirt. A brownish spot in the left margin.
A hardly visible horizontal fold.
Watermark: Paschal Lamb (c. 1651). According to Godefroy the fourth state would be also figuring in the so-called Picart edition. |
|
Even when this is a wrong interpreted name and it should be Pickaert, both would be too late in the century for the watermark found.
This is clearly a lifetime impression. The 2nd state in the Rijksprentenkabinet has the countermark LC, which belongs to the Paschal Lamb watermark.
A charming print which gives us also a good idea of a 17th century small farmhouse interior. |
