PIETER BOUT 1658 - Brussels - 1719

PIETER BOUT 1658 - Brussels - 1719  SOLD
The sleigh on the ice

Etching, ca. 1680.
Signed in the plate “P. Bout”
19.3 x 27.4 cm. With small margin. Bartsch, Dutuit, Hollstein 2. 2(II)

Very good impression and condition.
Watermark; Coat of arms of Amsterdam.
Provenance; Bibliothèque Royale Belgique. Blue stamp left upper corner recto (Lugt 1741).

Pieter Bout made only four etchings. Hollstein mentions five, but no.5 is probably not by him.
Of this extremely rare print very few impressions of the first state exist.
The second state has still soiled plate-edges and some plate-tone.
In places it is not very well printed, maybe due to uneven inking.
Bout, who was born and died in Brussels, was primarily a landscape painter and draughtsman
and made only four or five etchings, all of which are both rare and desirable.
This skating scene is perhaps the most desirable because of the subject.
